3P seller FBA vs 1P vendor

Sell it yourself, or sell it to Amazon?

The decision that shapes everything after it — your margin, your pricing control, your cash cycle — and the one nobody can answer for you in general, because the answer changes product by product. AMZ Verdict runs both channels on every product and tells you which one the numbers favour.

3P seller FBA

You sell to the customer. Amazon fulfils.

  • You set the price and keep control of it
  • You own the inventory and the working capital tied up in it
  • Amazon takes a referral fee on every sale, plus fulfilment, storage and returns
  • You carry the advertising, the returns and the unsold stock

1P vendor

You sell to Amazon. Amazon sells to the customer.

  • Amazon buys at wholesale, on purchase orders
  • Amazon sets the retail price, and will match a lower price found elsewhere
  • No referral fee — the cost sits in the wholesale price and the trading terms
  • Far less working capital and no unsold stock, but much less control

Why the answer is per product, not per business

These are the two products from our home page — identical price, cost, weight and box, in Germany, differing only by Amazon category. They do not just get different verdicts. They belong in different channels.

Amazon Device Accessories

As a 3P seller FBA business€0.07
As a 1P vendor€5.85

1P vendor

Go for 1P vendor. This product's 3P seller economics don't clear the bar — the 3P seller verdict is "Don't" — while the 1P vendor channel is profitable with a manageable cost of doing business.

Automotive and Powersports

As a 3P seller FBA business€7.42
As a 1P vendor€5.65

3P seller FBA

Both channels are structurally sound. 3P seller leaves EUR 1.77 more per unit than 1P vendor (EUR 7.42 vs EUR 5.65) — go for 3P seller, with 1P vendor remaining a viable fallback.

Read that again, because it is the whole point

Amazon Device Accessories is a “Don't” as a 3P seller FBA business — a 54% referral fee leaves €0.07 a unit. The identical product as a 1P vendor leaves €5.85, because a referral fee is a 3P seller cost and a wholesale price is not the same thing.

Automotive and Powersports goes the other way: it clears the bar in both channels, and 3P seller FBA leaves more per unit — so the control and the margin are worth having.

A business that picked one channel and applied it to everything would have got one of these two wrong, whichever it picked.

How the comparison is made

Two independent runs, not a teaser

The 1P vendor side is a full pipeline of its own — wholesale cost, trading terms, net receipts and contribution — run alongside the 3P seller FBA pipeline, not derived from it.

Wholesale terms come from published groups

Eleven economics groups carry wholesale and total-terms benchmarks with a stated tolerance. They are benchmarks, they are labelled as benchmarks, and you can replace them with your own.

The recommendation names its mechanism

It says which channel leaves more per unit and why — never what will happen to you if you pick one. Where neither channel clears the bar, it says that too rather than picking the less bad one.
